End each day with reflection

Make it a daily habit to reflect on your life and daily events.  Reflection helps you to check what you have been doing, what’s working as well as what’s not working. It helps you to continuously improve.

How reflection actually works according to the Gibs cycle

The Gibs cycle of reflection

There are several ways through which you can do the above exercises. You can choose to write your reflections in a journal, some may decide to take a walk and reflect, while others prefer talking about it to someone. Find a way that works better for you.

Reflection is all about being mindful. It creates awareness within you and your surroundings. As Caroline Myss said, “The soul usually knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind.”

You can reflect yearly, monthly or weekly but I prefer daily. Weekly or monthly may be too late to change certain things that needed immediate attention. Daily reflection helps us achieve the following;

6 Benefits of Reflection

  1. It gives you understanding and helps you make sense of things

Most of the time as we go through life, we are always in a rush and sometimes fail to understand certain things or get their meaning. Reflection gives you a better understanding of things. Overall how do you feel about your life? Are you satisfied, do you feel there are missing links that you need to find and join? It helps you process your thoughts and your feelings. We can even challenge our thoughts and our beliefs through reflection.

  1. It helps you learn from your mistakes

If we don’t reflect on our mistakes, we are doomed to repeat them. It helps you figure out what went wrong and how you can learn from it and prevent it in the future.

  1. It challenges your thoughts and gives you new ideas

Reflection challenges our beliefs and assumptions. It helps us to be more mindful of our thoughts. It also gives us a new perspective on how you can tackle problems or new ways of doing things. If you reflect you will realize that most of the answers that you are seeking in life, lie right within you.

  1. It helps us to keep track of our progress

It allows you to look back and see how far you have come and also makes you aware of where you are. Am I doing my best? If not, what do I need to do to improve?

  1. It helps us to live with intention

Reflection helps you to remain focused. You ask yourself questions such as am I living up to my values and my mission? If not, what do I need to change?

  1. It helps us to be grateful

When you are going through a rough day, it’s easier to view everything with a negative eye and energy but reflection will help you realize that not everything is going wrong and be grateful for the things that are going well in your life.
